Im Jahre 2004 eröffnete Mark Shuttleworth den ersten Bug-Bericht auf Launchpad: „Microsoft has a majority market share“. Tatsächlich hatte Microsoft damals einen über 90%-igen Anteil am Betriebssystemmarkt. Heute sieht die Sache anders aus, Mark Shuttleworth hat vor wenigen Stunden den Bug als „gelöst“ markiert.
Er schreibt:
Personal computing today is a broader proposition than it was in 2004: phones, tablets, wearables and other devices are all part of the mix for our digital lives. From a competitive perspective, that broader market has healthy competition, with IOS and Android representing a meaningful share […].

Android may not be my or your first choice of Linux, but it is without doubt an open source platform that offers both practical and economic benefits to users and industry. So we have both competition, and good representation for open source, in personal computing.
So direkt an Ubuntu gelegen hat es am Ende dann also doch nicht, dass das Monopol gebrochen wurde. Den größten Teil haben wohl Apple und Google zum Machtwechsel beigetragen, aber auch die Tatsache, dass Microsoft den Trend zu Smartphones und Tablets ziemlich verschlafen hat. [via]
